Kartal’s ecological market is not only the healthy option for grocery shopping on the Anatolian side but it will also become a center for sustainable living.
Istanbul Anatolian side’s first 100% Ecological Market opened after the signing of a protocol on December 20, 2009 between the Buğday Association for Supporting Ecological Living and Kartal Municipality. The Anatolian side’s first and only ecological market and was designed as a center of attraction for sustainable living. Besides fruits and vegetables, the market sells certified cotton, pasta, bread, shampoos, cleaning products and textile products. The market takes place on 1 acre of land half of which is closed space and has 200 stands. On the Ecological Market grounds, there is a large air-conditioned tent, which serves as a meeting point for sustainable living workshops, discussions on ecology, art activities and concerts. The market is regulated in accordance with Buğday’s standards for 100% Ecological Markets in order to bring together producers and consumers. The market is an exemplary practice of collaboration between a local government and a non-governmental organization. The market goes under routine examination by the city farming directorate as well as the municipality and the association. Throughout the year the market will be open every Sunday and offer a selection of products that are natural and healthy and are not genetically modified.
